September 2016: Labour Minister, Mildred Oliphant commented that “South African employers who do not meet employment equity criteria as stipulated by law have six months to rectify the situation.”
The department of labour has been clamping down on companies not yet complaint with Employment Equity. Fines in excess of R1,5 million have been issued.
What this means for your business is that if you fall under the category of “designated employer” (see definitions here), it is essential that you comply with the legislation in order to avoid serious penalties. September is Employment Equity season and gives companies an opportunity for first time compliance. The deadline for manual submissions is 30 October 2016.
